WOODWINDS

The history of woodwind development has much in common with the brass section of instruments as one might well imagine. Somewhere a long time ago a human being, perhaps even before intelligible speech was developed, started blowing through a hollow stick or bone as a way to entertain themselves. From there it was only a matter of time until that was combined with a crazy back beat made from banging a stick against a hollow log.  Maybe not but you get the idea. The beginnings of these instruments go back so far that nobody really can prove where it all started. Since that time however there have been many well documented developments in the wood winds, with many of the most important happening in the 1800's.
Musicians who play in the woodwind section are often times called “reed players” in spite of the fact that the flute does not use a reed. The other instruments in this category do use a reed though and some use double reeds and believe it or not triple and quadruple reeds. There are quite a few instruments in this category, dozens and dozens, and there just isn't room to list that many. So for the sake of brevity we are going to limit our discussion to three subgroups mainly the flute, clarinet and saxophone.  Intentionally leaving out the oboe, bassoon, bagpipes, pipe organ, aulochrome, and literally dozens more. Now if your particular instrument isn't listed here and you need an appraisal for insurance,  property division or any other reason just call Bruce at (330)--862-3031.
